They Came from Sicily to Play for You for Free
Tonight, Northwest suburban residents are in for an Italian treat to their ears. A popular 40-piece band from Sicily is in Chicago this week and is making a trip to the suburbs for a — free — one-night performance. At 7 p.m., The Village Band of Ciminna will give an hour-long concert at Palatine’s Community Park.
“It’s just so nice that they chose us,” said Palatine Mayor Rita Mullins. Mullins was part of the reason for the impromptu concert. Because of her international ties, a Chicago Italian-American leader suggested Palatine play host to the band.
“We chose Palatine because I know Rita and because I know there’s a strong Italian community in that area,” said Dominic DiFrisco, president emeritus of the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans. The band will perform popular Italian songs, as well as folk music and some modern tunes. The performance will be held at the Fred P. Hall Amphitheater, 262 E. Palatine Road. The band is from the Italian town of Ciminna, whose population is about 4,000.
In fact, there are as many people there as there are immigrants from Ciminna in Chicago, DiFrisco said. Last week, the band performed in Daley Plaza and has been doing some private shows. The Palatine concert will be their only other public performance.
