I have not experienced the women being unfriendly or the greeting being given to the husband but I do still find it strange that whole extended families live in the same street. I probably don't get the remarks about family that you do because it is known that I don't have family in the UK. I agree that you need to be quite self sufficient in some ways and have your own inner life. Very interesting. I saw a lot of what you describe when we lived in Spain for 4 years and became very friendly with Spanish women married to American and Filipino sailors. I really loved being included in their lives because the culture fascinated me. Also, our trip together to the Philippines, our 40th anniversary present to each other, was very similar to the experience (probably because the 400 years of Spanish rule intermingled the cultures). First and formost in both countries was love of family. Second was deep devotion to God, with many traditions I had never seen before. I hope we get to see you soon! Sharon,
