Shakespeare on the rocks: the Stromboli Project – June 5-25, 2010

Shakespeare on the rocks is a 3 week intensive workshop with Kristin Linklater, Susan Main and Alessandro Fabrizi.

“SHAKESPEARE ON THE ROCKS” is an episode of  “thestromboliproject: Ovid & Co.”, dedicated to the exploration, via the Linklater Technique, of texts inspired by images and stories from Ovid’s “Metamorphoses”.

SHAKESPEARE ON THE ROCKS will focus on scenes from Shakespeare’s plays that have a strong connection to the Ovidian masterpiece and/or Sicily and the Mediterranean sea. First, participants will explore and warm up their voices, embody the language of their texts and begin the search for meaning in and around the words. Kristin Linklater will then lead the participants in an in-depth understanding of the form and content of the texts. In the third segment of the workshop Susan Main and Alessandro Fabrizi will create with the participants a series of site-specific performances to test the vocal freedom and the understanding of text and context in pubblic spaces before an audience.

Daylong: Voice warm-ups, rehearsals and site-specific performances of the explored texts.

ACCOMMODATION

* Participants will be in double rooms with private bathroom at the Pensione La Nassa
* The working space for most classes will be on the terrace of the Pensione La Nassa

FOOD

* Dinners will be catered every night (except on days off) on the terrace at Pensione La Nassa.
* Grocery stores, coffee shops and restaurants will provide special discounts for participants.
* Participants will have use of the kitchen at Pensione La Nassa for breakfast and lunch.

TRAVEL TO STROMBOLI

* From Naples: ferry (Tuesdays and Fridays-8 pm)
* From Milazzo: ferry (every day approximately every hour from 6 am-2 pm)

Schedule/Details:

* Arrival early morning June 5th and final Performances June 25
* Daily: 6 hour with occasional extra evening sessions
* 3 days off (to be announced)
* Total of 120 hours of class time and rehearsals
* Maximum 16 participants

Participation Fee:

2.800 Euros, includes accommodation and dinners (not including travel or dinner on nights off).

Teatro de los sentidos/Abitare Palermo directed by Enrique Vargas will be performing at the theater Nuovo Montervergini in Palermo from February 12 through 27, 2010.

Teatro de los Sentidos Teatro de los Sentidos is a theater company directed by Enrique Vargas, formed by performers/researchers of diverse nationalities and fields of expertise who work on the poetics of the senses and research into the relationship between sensory language, body memory and theater.

The company aims towards a language based on that what is left unsaid. Following the path of ancestral oral traditions, where silence is a necessary condition for an effective communication between the play and the public.
