Ettore Messina: A Sicilian Success Story

    June 13, 2011 by

A friend forwarded a message about Ettore Messina a few days ago… He is a Sicilian who has worked hard to be where he is today.

Ettore Messina, one of Europe’s most celebrated coaches, appears close to joining Mike Brown on the staff of the Los Angeles Lakers. It’s not the first time that N.B.A. teams have courted Messina —he has turned down offers from Sacramento, Toronto and New Jersey. But this time he appears ready to make the jump. Little known by American fans, Messina has been a fixture in European basketball. He started coaching at age 16, beginning his career with Tonino Zorzi in Mestre, which is one train stop from Venice. After a couple of seasons, he moved to Bologna, the basketball capital of Italy. As an assistant coach to Sandro Gamba, Bob Hill and Alberto Bucci before and a head coach later, Messina spent more than 15 years with the Virtus Bologna. Coaching the young Manu Ginobili, now a star with the San Antonio Spurs, he won two Euroleague and several Italian championships. He coached the Italian national team for four years. When he left Bologna, he replaced Mike D’Antoni in Treviso, where he won several Italian championships and took a second place in the 2003 Euroleague. He then decided to move on. From 2005 to 2009, he led CSKA Moscow. Before moving to Madrid, he won two Euroleagues and four times reached the Euroleague semifinals. He has seemed to know when a team is close to the end of its cycle and when it’s a good time to move on to his next challenge.

The Targa Florio Historic Rally is the oldest automobile race event created in 1906 by the wealthy pioneer race driver and automobile enthusiast, Vincenzo Florio, who had started the “Coppa Florio” race in Brescia, Lombardy in 1900. Always one of the toughest competitions in Europe, the first Targa Florio covered 277 miles (446 km) through multiple hairpin curves on treacherous mountain roads, at heights where severe changes in climate frequently occurred.

By the mid-1920s, the Targa Florio had become one of Europe’s most important races, as neither the 24 Hours of Le Mans nor the Mille Miglia had been established yet. Grand Prix races were still isolated events, not a series like today’s F1.

After 1973, it was a national sports car event until it was discontinued in 1977 due to safety concerns. It is since run as a rallying event, and is part of the Campionato Italiano Rally, the Italian national rally championship.

Getting Ready for the Coppa Italia Final Inter vs. Palermo on Sunday

Inter midfielder Esteban Cambiasso will miss the Coppa Italia final against Palermo on Sunday, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The San Siro side will have to make do without the services of the experienced Argentina international after he sustained a hamstring problem.

Cambiasso missed last weekend’s Serie A game against Catania due to the knock and he could now reportedly be out for several weeks due to the hamstring injury.

It is not yet exactly known how long the midfielder will be out of action, but he could even miss the Copa America in his native country.

Contador Wins Stage Nine on Mount Etna to Take Overall Lead in Sicily

Alberto Contador  won stage nine of the Giro d’Italia on the summit of Mount Etna as the Spaniard took overall lead in the general classification.

The controversial three-time Tour de France winner attacked seven kilometres from the finish to finish clear of Venezuelan climber Jose Rujano at the 1892m summit on the south side of the Sicilian volcano.

Italian hope Stefano Garzelli won the battle for third, 50 seconds behind, with his compatriot Vincenzo Nibali in fourth.

Contador inherited the race leader’s pink jersey from Rabobank’s Dutch rider Pieter Weening, who had held the lead since last Wednesday’s fifth stage.

He has a 59sec cushion over Belarusian Kanstantsin Siutsou, with France’s Christophe Le Mevel third, at 1min 19sec.

Contador, who had started the stage in fifth after finishing second the day before, is aiming for a repeat Giro victory after winning on his only previous appearance in the race in 2008. [Sicilian cyclist Vincenzo Nibali was only fourth, but there are good hopes for him until the end].

Palermo Stops Milan and Reaches Coppa Italia Final

    May 11, 2011 by

AC Milan’s season came to an end when the Scudetto was clinched against Roma last weekend. Their dreams of a league and cup double disappeared at the Stadio Barbera, where Palermo ran out deserved 2-1 winners and confirmed their status as the Rossoneri’s bogey team – they are the only side to have beaten Allegri’s boys twice since the start of the year.

The Rosanero sealed their place in the final after the break: Migliaccio’s header broke the deadlock before Bovo doubled their lead from the spot, with Van Bommel sent off for conceding the penalty. He was immediately followed into the dressing rooms by Bovo, which evened the numbers up again. Ibra scored a sublime but ultimately insignificant goal deep into stoppage time.
