    By airplane

Sicily is served by two main airports: Falcone-Borsellino Airport in Palermo (West side of the island) and Fontana Rossa Airport in Catania (East side of the island). Both airports are connected daily to numerous Italian and international destinations. In Trapani, a third airport, the Vincenzo Florio, is served by AirOne airline, Ryanair and charter flights.

    By train

The Strait of Messina can be crossed by train, as the train crosses via ferryboat. It takes about 15 hours to reach Sicily from Milan by train. Trains from Rome/Naples to Sicily are divided into sections, so make sure that you are in the correct section (carriages are labelled with their destination, and your seat booking should be in the appropriate section). Before crossing the Strait of Messina by ferry, several carriages head off to Reggio di Calabria. The parts of the train that make the crossing trundle away from Messina in different directions; part to Syracuse (via Taormina and Catania) and part to Palermo. The train rolls on and off the boats at Villa San Giovanni and Messina. The lines Milan-Rome and Milan-Naples are operated by Eurostar; from Rome and Naples by Intercity. For more information and schedules, visit the official web site of Treni Italia.

    By boat

The transportation between Italy and Sicily is done by boat. Ferryboats and hydrofoils go back and forth from Messina to Reggio di Calabria and/or Villa San Giovanni. Depending on the type of transportation, it takes from 25 to 45 minutes to cross the Strait (hydrofoils usually take no longer than 15 minutes). Reservations are not needed since boats and hydrofoils usually leave every 30 minutes. The Società Caronte Shipping operates the ferryboats; SNAV operates the hydrofoils.

    By car

The Strait of Messina is actually crossed by boat in this case. Cars are parked onto ferryboats that cross the sea. There are quite a few ferry companies that offer the transportation of your car from Villa San Giovanni, Genova, Livorno, Cagliari and Napoli to Messina, Palermo, and Trapani.

    By bus

The Strait of Messina can be crossed by bus, ar the bus crosses via ferryboat.
