Wucciria is a day-long event to rediscover one of Palermo’s most ancient and folklorist marketplaces and experience the typical atmosphere of this Sicilian quintessential tradition.

La Vuccirìa was originally born as a meat market during the Angevin domination, the name in fact derives from the French word boucherie and means butcher shop. In Palermitan dialect the word vuccirìa means noise, confusion, overlapping voices. As a matter of fact the merchants use to shout loudly to attract buyers, a peculiarity of many southern Italian markets.

Saturday’s event is organized by the Università degli studi di Palermo, City of Palermo and Associazione Via Roma and has the goal to promote this historic area of the city and make people aware of its artistic and architectural beauties from Plaza San Domenico to Steri Palace, headquarters of Palermo’s University. Renato Guttuso’s most famous painting named La Vuccirìa is exposed there.

Edoardo Raspelli, a popular Italian journalist, is scheduled to present a special fish auction in the heart of the market. He will also host the food talks at the Rinascente Store in via Roma where people can taste blue fish dishes prepared with sardines and anchovies.
